commonly known as Saladin, was a Kurdish Muslim military leader and statesman who lived during the 12th century. He was born in Tikrit, in modern-day Iraq, in 1137 or 1138 and died in Damascus, in present-day Syria, in 1193. Salahuddin is best known for his role in the recapture of Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187 after his victory at the Battle of Hattin.
